Getting Head First Before It’s Released Is The Best!
Tuesday, March 16th, 2010Goldfrapp’s latest album Head First, slated for release later this month, has leaked onto the glorious inter-webs. And boy am I glad to hear it! Alison Elizabeth Margaret Goldfrapp has solidified her position as my favorite female vocalist of all time. Her last album, Seventh Tree, got me hooked on her dreamy ethereal landscapes, although it was a slight departure from her well-established synth-pop persona. Head First marks her return to the world of dance, and it’s quite a return indeed.
You may have heard her first single, Rocket, on WeeklyTRACKS. As the first track on the album, Rocket serves as a great introduction to the 80’s throwback world that Head First seems to live in. With it’s Jump-style synth lines and huge chorus, it is true movie montage material. The second track, Believer, is also great single material, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it did better than Rocket on the charts. Both tracks were produced by Pascal Gabriel, who has also worked with Kylie, Ladyhawke, and Little Boots. The third track, Alive, is probably my favorite. It sounds like someone took the dreamy sounding Seventh Tree, and injected it with NOS. That someone being british producer Richard X.
All in all, Head First is a magnificent addition to Will & Alison’s already impressive Goldfrapp discography, and if it doesn’t break charts here, it will in the UK. I’m actually considering buying it, that’s how good this is…

Monday, January 25th, 2010It’s been a great week for music leaks, first we got “Fragile” from Daft Punk’s upcoming Tron Legacy soundtrack, and now I see that two of my favorite girls, Goldfrapp, and Zooey Deschanel are releasing singles for their new albums! Check out “Rocket” from Goldfrapp’s new album Head First, and “In The Sun” from what’s sure to be this summers musical blockbuster She & Him’s Volume Two. Above and below are promotional videos for Danger’s upcoming EP.

Memento [as in the literal word ‘memento’, not the feature film ‘Memento (2000)’ directed by Christopher Nolan starring Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Joe Pantoliano]
Wednesday, June 17th, 2009You may remember how sad I was when I found out Kim’s Video, my go-to spot for hard to find films, closed. Well, to make news worse, they just announced that their second location in the west village is also closing. This marks the true end of my favorite local video store, making Netflix really my best option for getting DVD’s. The two Kim’s video locations were a huge part of my life here in NY, and I wasn’t about to just let them die alone. So I picked up a few DVD’s at the storewide sale they had this week.
It seems that pretentious film school hasn’t gotten to me yet, because the movies I chose were: Gladiator: 3-disc Extended Edition, Rome: Season 2, and Armageddon: The Criterion Collection. I got ‘em all for about 30 bucks (a steal, considering each one would cost about 30 bucks).
But my story doesn’t end there. The abandoned Kim’s Video location on St. Mark’s Place is currently in the process of being torn down. Today, as I walked by, I noticed the poster of one of my favorite albums was still sitting in it’s case. Watching the construction workers tearing the place apart made me think, gee, no one is going to claim this stuff, why shouldn’t I? After a good 5 minutes of pu**y woody trying to talk me out of it. I strolled in, walked up the stairs to the balcony, ripped the poster out of the case, and walked out. No questions asked. For me, this was not only an amazing piece of free art, it’s also the kind of closure I needed to finally let go of my former favorite store in New York city. I hope Tim doesn’t mind me hanging it in our new place– It’s huge.

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009This week’s music post is actually an album, because it’s really all I’ve been listening to lately. For a long time, the only Goldfrapp songs I knew were Ooh La La and Strict Machine. I thought they just did the electro/dance/glam/rock thing– Boy, was I wrong. Last year they released Seventh Tree, an acoustic album with a gentle sound mellow enough chill Air out. I’ve been listening to it on repeat, especially Eat Yourself, Road To Somewhere, Happiness, and Clowns…

Go hug a giant owl
So, if for some reason, you suddenly get the urge to chill, check it out.

What do you think? Does it beat the original? Goldfrapp’s is one take, so yes, it wins.
