I’m on the hunt for a TV stand, but haven’t found anything good yet. Today I came across an image of this Gerrit Thomas Rietveld sideboard design from 1919 and I instantly fell in love. [more pics, pics, pics] Too bad it’s in a museum and not on craigslist.

Arcade Fire: Doing It Right

I normally don’t buy albums, but when I saw Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs available for pre order on their website, I snatched it up immediately. Why?

It was DRM-free
It came with 320kbps MP3, FLAC, and Apple Lossless versions
It only cost $7.99

Finally, someone got it right. This is how you sell an album. I’ll never buy music from iTunes ever again (DRM, lossy format, $9.99).

I was pretty bummed when I heard they were playing Madison Square Garden while I was in SF this summer. So you can imagine how happy I was when they decided to stream the whole concert live on YouTube. I watched it on my 9-foot screen and it was almost as good as being there. Why hasn’t anyone else done this before? Concerts and YouTube are a match made in heaven. Let’s make this happen.

Today I saw the music video for We Used To Wait directed by Chris Milk. It blew my mind. It’s not a video for MTV because nobody watches MTV. It’s the new breed of music video. The interactive music video, made possible by services like Google Maps and html5. Aside from being a great song, it’s the best music video I’ve seen all year.

Arcade Fire is slowly restoring my faith in the music industry. They just seem to understand how the internet works. and chris milk is the best music video director of all time.

Fred Astaire: Defying Gravity

In 1951, Fred Astaire performed a gravity defying dance that left everyone scratching their heads. 60 years later, Inception’s hallway fight dazzled audiences with the same effect.

Check out this cool video showing how the room rotated throughout the scene. There are two things in this scene that I haven’t figured out. First, the photo seems to stick to the desk and chair, how did they do this? Glue? Magnets? Second, the film shows the camera following Fred around the room, but the the shot on the right seems to be taken from one angle. Did they just crop a wider shot or did they actually follow Fred around with the camera? Guess I’ll have to wait for the 2-disc special-edition blu-ray behind-the-scenes making-of bonus-materials.

BEWARE OF SPOILERS (JACOB)
This very well done infographic outlines the final mission of Inception. I especially like the two cross symbols which indicate Saito and Cobbs death and subsequent falling into unconstructed dream space. This confused me the for a while because I couldn’t figure out where the first scene took place. [via deviant art]
